The True Role of a Mentor

A note to mentors and mentees.

When the student is ready, the teacher appears.

The role of a mentor is not to explain. The role of the mentor is to reveal, to disclose.

The rest is up to the student. They either see or don’t see.

Either way, that’s the right outcome. We see when we are ready to see, when we are ready to benefit from the seeing.

Education derives from the word “educe” which means “to elicit or draw out something hidden, latent or reserved.”

All instruction is but a finger pointing at the moon. If you stare at the finger, you won’t see the moon.
