Stop Walking on Eggshells: A Leadership Guide to Honest Feedback

Notes to Young Leaders | 6 February 2023

A note to young leaders.
Are you walking on egg shells?

Is there someone in your team that you or your team mates are afraid to provide honest feedback to – for fear that it may trigger a hostile reaction?

Walking on egg shells is everywhere and always a failure of leadership.
Set up a meeting with the relevant individual and say: “I and others are walking on egg shells around you. Walking on egg shells is not fun, it’s very tiring and it has to stop.”

Then provide honest feedback in a polite and constructive way. Ask them how they intend to respond. If they resist change, coach them out of your team.
No one, not even the CEO, is so valuable that they should be permitted to intimidate team mates from providing honest feedback.

No walking on egg shells, for anyone, no exceptions.
Commit yourself to this policy at team meetings and consistently follow through – and watch your team morale sky rocket.
