Happiness Was Never Meant to Be This Hard

Notes to Young Leaders | 11 September 2026

A note to young leaders.

If you’re unhappy, guess what?

You only have yourself to blame. Misery is a human invention.

Think of an activity that you love to do for its own sake – whether it succeeds or not, whether it’s useful or not, whether you’re appreciated for it or not, whether people even know about it or not.

Can you think of such a thing?

Surfing at dawn, baking a cake, writing poetry, dancing the samba, cycling through a forest, sailing at sunset.

Something you engage in simply because it delights you and grips your soul.

Can you think of more than one?

Trust me on this: the more time you dedicate to activities such as these – the more spontaneous, joyful and light-hearted your life will be.

Stop depending on others for your happiness, and people will start gravitating towards you.

You were born happy. Happiness is your natural state.

Untether your soul. Break loose into that realm of innocent joy where only children and mystics dwell.
