Don’t Be Afraid to Ask the Awkward Questions

Notes to Young Leaders | 19 February 2025

A note to young leaders.

Caveat emptor, buyer beware.

Last weekend, I met with a friend who told me a story about a guy who bought a penthouse in a residential tower in Bondi Junction in 2014 for a little over $6 million.

The open house inspections were always conducted at 9.00am, which struck him as a little unusual. Still, he proceeded with the acquisition.

After he moved in, he discovered that his spacious balcony was totally unusable in the afternoons because of gale-force winds.

If something strikes you as unusual, don’t be afraid to prod and probe. Ask to see the unit at dusk and see what the agent says.

Show me a person who’s afraid of looking foolish, and I’ll show you a person who’s been fooled many times.
