How Predictive Maintenance Can Teach Us Proactive Leadership

Digital twins can use data and AI to predict when the lifts in a building are likely to break down and to get them fixed before they do.

Predictive maintenance got me thinking about the age-old debate between free will and determinism. Is the future pre-determined or is there such a thing as free will ?

The modern answer to this question is: both. The future at any given time is an infinite set of dynamic probabilities, which are changing moment by moment, action by action.

Which in turn reminds me of one of my favourite Sherlock Holmes quotes: “After eliminating the impossible, whatever remains – however improbable – is the truth.”

I think we can all learn from the digital twin approach to predictive maintenance, and act to prevent a crisis from happening when the probability of its occurrence rises above (say) 60%.

It’s a great way to live a more proactive (and less reactive) life.
