Lessons in Leadership from Shane Warne

Notes to Young Leaders | 7 March 2022

It’s no surprise that Shane Warne is regarded by the Australian public with such affection.

Despite his flaws – who amongst us is perfect? – he was a legendary cricketer, a larrikin, a brilliant commentator, a good bloke and a natural leader.

Listen to what Warne had to say about:

– Teams. “All teams need lots of room for personality and individuality.” He’s right. Colourful personalities are a major asset for high performing teams because they spur humour and camaraderie. Celebrate them, don’t cut them to size.

– Authenticity. When Australia won the World Cup in 2015, Warne was criticised on Twitter for glorifying alcohol because he asked the players about their post-match drinking plans. Not one for political correctness, Warne tweeted back: “Do gooders get stuffed. Keep it real. Aussies celebrate properly! #thirsty”.

– On staying young at heart. “There’s still a big kid inside me who likes to have fun. I am passionate about my cricket and I love my family, but I’m also a kid and maybe I need to grow up… And maybe I don’t.”

As Michael Parkinson said in his definitive interview of Warne, he was “quite simply, special.” Worth watching the interview with Tracey Holmes below if you’re in any doubt.

You brought a lot of magic, mateship and colour into our living rooms. Vale, Shane Keith Warne, we miss you already.
