Loyalty in Leadership: Speaking Truth with Respect
A note to young leaders. On loyalty.
Loyalty is an important quality in both leaders and followers.
The late, great John Caldon – former Deputy MD of Macquarie – taught me the true meaning of loyalty.
“Loyalty doesn’t mean you don’t speak up, Adam. Loyalty is: I’m with you whether you’re wrong or right. But I’ll privately tell you when I think you’re wrong and I’ll do my bit to help you to get it right.”
Only weak leaders are threatened by people who speak their truth – as long as the feedback is delivered privately and diplomatically and the intent is good.
So go ahead, speak up, it’s your loyal duty to do so.
