The Power of Kindness and Growth
Recently, an EG colleague and a good friend of mine contacted me to let me know that he and his wife had contracted Covid and were in the throes of its symptoms.
Far from complaining, he made this telling observation: “The number of people who’ve reached out to us to offer their help has been overwhelming. We’ve not needed anything but the offers are very touching. Really made me think how much helping others can uplift those who are struggling, and the impact that kindness can have on the world.”
He then went on to say: “I’ve always thought of myself as a kind and generous person but this whole experience has shown me that I’m not as kind as I think I am. The world is much kinder than I imagined it, and I feel that I need to do more to give back.”
I simply replied: “The world is a mirror. The kindness you’re receiving is an echo of the kindness you’ve shown to others in the past.”
But my friend has a growth mindset, so he challenged my interpretation: “Mmm, not sure. I think the world’s reminding me I can do better. I’m going to put myself down to do some volunteering.”
There it is. Gratitude and growth in the midst of Covid.
This is the power of the human spirit – to turn misfortune into gratitude and illness into growth.
Here’s to my friend for his inspirational reaction 🥂and happy new year to all.
