The Advice I Cherished
Well before my father passed away, I recorded over 30-hours of interviews with him. I wanted to capture his life story and advice, in his own voice.
When it came to dispensing advice to each of his three sons, his counsel to me was emphatic: “You have a gift for writing. Write.” When I protested, my father simply repeated his earlier command: “Write.”
Years passed.
Earlier this year, when John R Caldon sadly lost his battle with lung cancer, I wrote a number of short posts on LinkedIn honouring his memory. The reaction was immediate and overwhelming. Scores of readers, particularly the younger generations, reached out to express their support and appreciation.
To all those who reached out, thank you. The two great mentors of my life would be well pleased.
All this teaches me two things: (1) listen to the advice of your parents, they know you better than anyone else and want only the best for you; and (2) honour and preserve the memory of your mentors, veneration of our elders is a vital part of the cycle of life.
Wishing everyone a safe, joyful and revitalising break. See you all in 2022 – it’s bound to be another great adventure.
