The Wisdom of Trees

Notes to Young Leaders | 30 July 2021

On the wisdom of trees.

Many years ago – way before the advent of Uber – I was talking to a taxi driver who grew up in the countryside.

“I wonder”, I mused out loud, “why violent crime in the city is so much higher than in the country.”

“That’s easy”, he exclaimed. “Have you ever tried feeling angry sitting under a tree?”

Eureka! My driver-guru nailed it in one.

More than ever – with lockdowns and social distancing now the norm – we are in need of the gentle company of trees.

There’s only one downside: you have to go to them.

So make time today to visit a tree near you. Sit under it for 10 minutes and let its serenity seep into you.

Do that enough times, and you will begin to discern that each tree has its own unique personality.

Still, they all whisper one thing: relax, fellow traveller, everything’s going to be OK.
