Power of Tribes: How Leaders Build Resilient Teams
A note to young leaders. On the power of tribes.
Coastal Redwoods are the tallest trees on earth. These majestic trees reach heights in excess of 110m and live for more than 2,000 years.
You might think the tallest trees on earth would have the deepest roots
– but you’d be wrong.
Redwood roots are surprisingly shallow, often not more than 2 metres deep. But what they lack in depth, they make up for in breadth. The Redwood root system often extends up to 30 metres from the trunk.
And here’s the clincher. Redwoods thrive in thick groves, where their roots intertwine and fuse. This merged roots system gives them tremendous resilience against the cataclysmic forces of nature: high winds, withering droughts and raging floods.
What is true in nature is also true of us.
Tribes with shared values (shared roots) will endure adversities and achieve heights that no individual, however brilliant, can attain.
Is the tribe you’re leading destined for greatness? Do you have shared values? Do you have each other’s back in a crisis? Do you share information and opportunities freely with each other? Are you quick to support one another?
Greatness grows in groves. Get close to your colleagues, intertwine your roots – and then prepare for record-breaking growth.
