Contrary to popular belief, the best leaders are demanding.

Research shows that highly-rated leaders are those who are both demanding and kind.

But here’s the surprise – demanding and unsympathetic leaders are rated more highly than kind, ineffective leaders.

In other words, we prefer leaders who hold us accountable to high standards. Why?

Because we long for leaders who are committed to a vision and who see great potential in others. Such leaders cannot bear to see potential squandered.

If you are kind but don’t hold your team members accountable, you are failing them.

Leaders are passionate and compassionate. They inspire and challenge.

Don’t choose one or the other. Be both.
