The Power of Being Misunderstood: Lessons for Young Leaders
A note to young leaders.
Are you feeling misunderstood?
Here are a few thoughts to help you along the way:
- The vast majority of your thoughts and feelings are known only to you. You are, in many ways, a mystery even to those closest to you. It’s your job to de-mystify yourself. It’s called “communication”. Own it.
- You’re not alone. Everyone is misunderstood sometimes. It’s a natural occurrence. Don’t obsess over it.
- Don’t take it so seriously. So what if someone sees your kindness as meanness or your friendliness as fake? Learn to see the funny side of it.
- Being misunderstood is a perfect opportunity for humble self-reflection. Say to yourself: “I’m far from perfect. In what ways might this uncharitable view of me contain a kernel of truth?” This will keep you grounded.
After you’ve done all that: Smile. Relax. Continue to be your cheerful, kind, enthusiastic self.
Because the truth about who you are will eventually out. Trust in that. Let your actions over months, years and decades speak for themselves.
All things in time, time will reveal.
