Lamine Yamal and the Weight of a Name

No one is self-made. Champions least of all.

Lamine Yamal, Spain’s 19-year-old football sensation, needs no reminding. That truth is encoded in his name.

His full name is Lamine Yamal Nasraoui Ebana – two given names and two surnames.

The first surname is from his father, the second from his mother. But why two given names?

Before Lamine Yamal was born, his parents were teenagers struggling to pay the rent. Two men stepped in and helped them out. Their names were Lamine and Yamal.

His parents made them a promise. If they were ever blessed with a son, they would give the boy both of their names.

They couldn’t repay the debt with money, so they repaid it with memory.

Most gratitude has a short shelf-life. We send a bottle of wine, write “legend” in a text message with three exclamation marks and consider the moral account settled. Lamine Yamal’s parents did something different.

Now every goal he scores obliges fifty thousand people in the stadium, and some millions beyond it, to shout the names of two otherwise anonymous men who once helped pay the rent.

Imagine what that must feel like for both Lamine and Yamal.

That’s the best way to do gratitude – not as gesture, but as structure.
