Embrace Both Supporters and Detractors

To leaders aspiring for greatness, you do well to remember this.

For every person who lauds you for your success, there’s another person who’ll criticise you for it.

And for every person who openly admires you for your success, there’s another person who secretly resents you for it.

It’s not that one is good and the other bad. They are both part of the universe’s longing for equilibrium. It is as sure as the law of gravity and we should be grateful for it.

Every car needs its accelerator and its brakes. So too our supporters and detractors.

Detractors rouse us to try harder, and with a little luck, make us humbler.
