The Art of Happiness: Less Is More
Happiness is an art – and art is the elimination of the unnecessary. So just as the first half of life is often focused on accumulation; the second half ought to be focused on elimination.
Happiness in adult life is less about adding brush strokes to your busy canvass – and more like a sculpture where you’re chipping away at the detritus.
Almost all of us are living under mountains of clutter. It is the rubble of things, enmities and anxieties that we have accumulated over the years.
When Michelangelo was asked by an admiring passerby: How did you carve out that angel? He looked puzzled:
“The angel was always there. I only carved the marble until I set him free.” Eliminate what is surplus and happiness will naturally appear.
