Overcoming Worry with Action

Notes to Young Leaders | 15 August 2022

To young leaders.

Worry does not rob tomorrow of its troubles, it robs today of its strength.

But how best to overcome worry?

“Don’t worry, be happy” is poor counsel. That’s just blind optimism.

“Don’t worry, get ready”, on the other hand, is sound counsel. That’s optimism with eyes wide open.

Positive action cuts through the Gordian knot of worry like a sword. So don’t sit up late at night thinking about your problem, get busy doing something about it.

Take action. Immediately.

Your mind cannot occupy two modes at any one time. The moment you take action towards solving a problem, your mind switches out of “worry mode” and into “problem-solving mode”.

And while it is commonly thought that courage inspires action – far more often, it is action that inspires courage. Action only requires a modicum of hope – but once taken, leads on to courage.
