How to Respond to Compliments

Notes to Young Leaders | 15 June 2022

Note to self.

I must be quick to correct others if they put me on a pedestal.

Praise I don’t fully deserve is an ego trap. If I accept it, I’m compelled to pretend to be someone I’m not.

Yet to reject a compliment is often to invite its repetition. So how best to respond?

By thankfully acknowledging the sentiment behind the compliment and humbly correcting it.

I must learn to say: “Thank you, that’s very kind of you to say. Sadly though, I’m not as good as that – but I’m working on it.”
