Pride: The Root of Division in Teams

Notes to Young Leaders | 25 March 2024

Pride is a weed – weed it out, first in yourself and then from your team.

Intelligent, honest, driven people often disagree about the best course of action for an organisation – sometimes passionately. This type of debate is normal and indeed healthy.

So, what’s the difference between a debate and an argument? Pride.

Arguments and strife do not arise because one person is right and another wrong. They arise as a result of pride.

Or to put it differently, the desire to see your opinion prevail over others, to “be right” rather than to “get it right.”

Only by pride comes contention, and a house divided against itself will fall.
