Success and Wealth Grow Exponentially Over Time

Notes to Young Leaders | 28 November 2022

A note to young leaders.

When I mentor executives in their early or mid-thirties, they often express disappointment with their career progress and net wealth.

This is what I tell them: wealth and career are both subject to the law of compounding. Their trajectory is not linear. Their progress is exponential.

This is because your career and wealth are driven primarily by your expertise, experience and network – all of which snowball over time.

The last three rolls of the snowball gather more snow than the previous ten.

I started EG when I was 30. It took 4-years to breakeven. So at the age of 34, my net wealth was very modest.

But the last 5-years have generated more wealth than the previous 20-years. Why? It’s the snowball effect.

By all means, aim for big things and have a sense of urgency. But don’t be short-term greedy. Be long term ambitious.
