Venture Into the Deep
A note to young leaders.
Life is infinitely wide, but it’s also infinitely deep. The visible world is fascinating, but no more so than the invisible world.
Duc in altum.
This was Pope John Paul II’s favourite expression. It’s Latin for “venture into the deep.”
Popular culture is keeping you in the shallows. Don’t get stuck there. It will leave you exhausted and unfulfilled.
The shallows are full of “I” and “me”. But there’s more to life than just our personal interests, profession, possessions, pleasure, power or privilege.
Just ask Macbeth what the shallows feel like: “Life is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.”
Beneath the surface rush of things, there’s something else in store.
Venture into the deep and cast your net, you’ll be surprised by what you pull up.
